A lot of public — the ones with brains — scoffed when Sarah Palin couldn’t name for Katie Couric a restricted newspaper or magazine she reads. Yet, just two days later, she suddenly claimed on Fox News (of course, it would be Fox!) that she reads “the same things that other society across the country read.” soon after, she reeled off the names of three publications including the politically right-of-center “Economist” magazine.

Understandably, that same crowd of folks with brains was incredulous.

John McCain’s Pensacola proving ground

PENSACOLA - The young pilot had a reputation, and it was nothing to be proud of. Fifth from the bottom of his course at Annapolis. Bratty. A carouser. Fellow officers called him "the Punk."

On July 27, 1959, he was at the controls of a propeller-driven T-28 Trojan, flying in patchy skies approach Pensacola. His mission: Land the 4½-ton aircraft on a 150-foot lengthy strip of the Antietam, itself a moving target as it steamed into the wind, heaving in the swells of the Gulf of Mexico.

Few pilots have the skill or the nerve to land a plane on a carrier. Some die trying.

1 man killed, another injured crossing State Road 60

TAMPA — One man was killed and another was in critical critical condition after being hit by a car on State Road 60 Saturday night.

Just before 9 p.m., an elderly women driving a Mercury car east of State Road 60 struck two men who were crossing just south of Falkenburg Road, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol.

One of the men died on State Road 60, the other was taken by ambulance to Tampa General Hospital, with serious injuries and is being treated for trauma, said Ray Yeakley, a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman.

The driver and her passenger were not hurt, Gaskins said, and authorities were still working to determine who was at fault.

The PacTen Merits Zero Respect

The Pac Ten might be the country’s worst conference, and I don’t mean that as hyperbole, but as a simple recitation of fact.

The conference leaders (a 4 way-tie at present) have lost to 3 Mountain West teams, and an ACC and SEC team, yet are undefeated in their conference play.

Armed robber hits Pinellas Park pawn shop

PINELLAS PARK — An armed man tried to rob the Southern Pawn Shop in Pinellas Park today and fled before police arrived.

No shots were fired and no one was injured, although pawn shop employees told police that the man displayed a handgun. It was unclear what was stolen.

Employees of the shop at 6249 Park Boulevard in Pinellas Park called police to say they were being robbed just before 3 p.m. The man fled before police arrived.

Police closed Park Boulevard in both directions and evacuated the area while they searched for the man.

White seeks ex-aide’s cell-phone records

TAMPA — Attorneys for Hilllsborough County and Commissioner Kevin White are seeking the cell-phone records of his ex-aide, who has sued him on claims of sexual discrimination. Their aim: To question her credibility.

The attorneys told a federal court judge Friday they are looking for records of calls to and from the aide, Alyssa Ogden, and a prominent businessman that she and White met on a trip to Atlanta.

Ogden, who was 22 at the day, claims White paid a late-night visit to her hotel room and asked to sleep in her bed during the April 2007 Atlanta trip that took place during her first week on the job.

Decapitation trial ends with guilty verdict, life sentence

LARGO — Dennis George Roache may have severe psychological problems, but a jury decided at 6:15 p.m. that evening that he additionally acted with premeditation when he decapitated Gregory Shannon with a machete in 2002.

Circuit Judge Robert Morris Jr. thereupon sentenced Roache, 40, to life in prison.

“Good luck to you sir,” the judge told the defendant.

Roache acted as he has all through the trial. He stood impassively for the verdict and sentencing, occasionally crossing his arms, as thought he were just a bystander, and not a man convicted of cutting off another man’s head.

Morris found Roache competent to stand trial in February, after the defendant had been twice declared incompetent.

The defendant already had a history of mental illness when hebroke into a St.

Decapitation case goes to jury

LARGO — Dennis George Roache broke into a home six years ago with a machete and decapitated the man he found sleeping with his ex-girlfriend.

Roache thereupon took the man’s head external, showed it off to the neighbors, and propped it against the windshield of a car. thereupon Roache placed a reflect in front of his victim’s head.

As his first-degree murder trial drew to a shut that afternoon, Roache’s defense attorney asked the jury the pivotal question of that case:

Doesn’t that sound crazy?

“The act speaks for itself,” said Assistant Public Defender Ron Eide.
